Equatorial Submesoscale Eddies Contribute to the Asymmetry in ENSO Amplitude

چکیده
El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) exhibits evident amplitude asymmetry with stronger Niño than La Niña events. Equatorial submesoscale eddies act as an important damper of ENSO via their induced upward heat flux () from the subsurface to surface ocean. Yet effect on remains unexplored. Using a high-resolution global climate simulation, we found that strengthening in Niño3.4 region during is more weakening Niño, resulting damping This asymmetric response primarily ascribed temperature fronts associated larger-scale processes. recharge oscillator model modified include effects , show by contributes importantly asymmetry.

ENSO Asymmetry in CMIP5 Models
The El Ni~ no–La Ni~ na asymmetry is evaluated in 14 coupled models from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). The results show that an underestimate of ENSO asymmetry, a common problem noted in CMIP3 models, remains a common problem in CMIP5 coupled models. The weaker ENSO asymmetry in the models primarily results from a weaker SST warm anomaly over the eastern Pacific ...
متن کاملCoexistence of Equatorial Coupled Modes of ENSO*
To study the regimes of leading ocean–atmosphere coupled modes of relevance to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, a comprehensive eigenmode analysis of an intermediate coupled model linearized with respect to an array of basic states is performed. Different kinds of leading modes are found to coexist and become unstable under wide ranges of basic states and parameter conditions...
متن کاملLow-Frequency Variability of Temperature in the Vicinity of the Equatorial Pacific Thermocline in SODA: Role of Equatorial Wave Dynamics and ENSO Asymmetry
The Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) reanalysis (1958–2001) is used to investigate the decadal variability in the equatorial thermocline in the Pacific.Whereas the thermocline depth exhibits weak variation at decadal time scales, the temperature change in the vicinity of the thermocline in the western Pacific is significant and has a vertical scale of;150 m. Based on a modal decomposition ...
متن کاملENSO and non‐ENSO induced charging and discharging of the equatorial Pacific
TWC modes. Results indicate that the oceanic evolution for both modes is consistent with wind stress induced verticallyintegrated, meridional mass transport into and out of the equatorial Pacific—i.e. a charging and discharging of the equatorial Pacific—despite having distinctly different wind stress anomaly patterns. The process-based similarity between these two modes of tropical Pacific wind...
متن کاملCoastal currents Submesoscale eddies Baltic Sea Remote sensing MODIS SAR CODAR
This paper presents an overview of the sub-mesoscale eddies observed in the coastal zone of the south-eastern Baltic near the shores of the Sambian Peninsula and the Curonian Spit based on CODAR (high-frequency coast-based radar) measurements and analysis of MODIS and ASAR satellite images for the period 30 March 2000– 31 December 2011. It was found that when winds are predominantly SW, S or W,...
